Sep 04, 2009 I pulled the dryer out to day and as i thought the plug and receptacle were burnt on the red wire, totally destroyed. There was a small mark where the cord was sitting on the vent but it did not go through. I took the cord apart to see if I could see any more damage in the cord. There was only the burnt up metal plug that goes to the red wire.

Nov 16, 2010 Maybe the dryer plug was broken and the same electrician replaced the broken plug as wired the heater. My, why didnt the breaker trip question has been answered. How about the three versus four prong question. Should I replace the melted receptacle with a four prong. If so, why. What safety features does the ground wire offer.
Aug 15, 2014 Note problems with outlets melting can be caused by a high amperage appliance like a space heater plugged into an old outlet with loose connections . Apr 09, 2020 A gas dryer plugs into an ordinary 120-volt electrical outlet, and it has a cord fitted with an ordinary appliance plug. An electric dryer, on the other hand, heats the air with electric heating elements and runs on 240-volt current, which requires a much different outlet receptacle and a special heavy-duty appliance cord with a unique plug.
Unplug the dryer cord before working on the appliance. Do not plug a dryer cord into a receptacle unless it is properly and completely connected to the dryer. Almost all manufacturers sell dryers without a cord attached, allowing you to select 3-prong vs. 4-prong dryer cord to match your outlet.
Jun 22, 2010 Another possibility is that the electrical outlet is old and worn. If the toaster is plugged into an outlet where the plug prongs dont fit tightly, then heat from arcing can occur right where the prongs meet the contacts in the outlet. This is more likely to happen with appliances which draw heavier current, such as the toaster or a hair dryer.
Turn off the circuit breaker to the outlet. Test it with a circuit tester to make sure the power is off. Inspect the broken prong to see how deeply it is embedded in the plug. If it is sticking out enough, grab it with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull it straight out.

Feb 25, 2019 I have put a new plug on the extension and left the dryer running, with me being there, in case the new plug got hot and started to melt. All the way through the dryer in use, which was around 30 mins, the plug did get warm which I would expect from something using nearly 3 kW but nothing which I would say was a concern.

Oct 18, 2010 Joined 07 August 2007. 13 amp plugs and sockets do not cope well with being fully loaded, even reputable makes get alarmingly hot, and cheap ones often melt. Kettles seem OK as they are only used for a few minutes at a time, but space heaters that may run for hours are problematic if they use more than about 10 amps.

Sep 24, 2019 For starters, the heavy cable used on an electric dryer may have three or four heavy wires. Since 2000, electrical code states that four wires are required. For many people fooling with these heavy wires is very intimidating. The wires are heavy gauge because the dryer heating element draws 15 Amps. Normal lamp cord wiring will get hot and melt.
1. remove both washer and dryer plugs from the outlet and turn the breaker back on. If it trips the outletline has a problem. 2. If the outlet stays on plug ONE of the machines in. If it trips that is the problem, if not. 3. Unplug the one machine and plug the other in and repeat above steps. 4.
Jun 19, 2020 The first time I saw one of these TT-30 plugs on an RV I also assumed it was 240 volts, until I looked at the plug closely and saw it was listed for 120 volts. That was the hint I needed to avoid making an expensive mistake as well. Dryer outlets. Below is what a 30-amp120-volt RV outlet looks like compared to a 30-amp240-volt dryer outlet.
